Changing your Google Console Website Address

 Our customers often ask how to change their Google Search Console web address, and how to change their URL without losing their SEO rankings in the process.

Thankfully, it’s not a rocket science; we have step-by-step tutorial for you.

 Note : Keep in mind that Google are often changing their UI but the way the whole procedure works remains the same, so at the moment your are reading this article Google Search Console may look a bit different.

Before we begin changing your URL, there are a few things you need to do:

  1. Install an SSL Certificate on your website (if you haven’t already done so);
  2. Add all your website versions in Google Search Console (again, if you haven’t already);
  3. Select the preferred website version (i.e. choose whether or not your site to appears with “www” in Google Search);
  4. Set up 301 redirects;

Make sure you add separate Search Console properties for all URL variations that your site supports, including https, http, www, and non-www.

Google Search Console has a set procedure for this but adding the new domain will not be enough.

After you have verified your website, return to Google Search Console and follow the steps below:

First, click on Add a Property (1) and then select Website (2), then enter the SSL version of your website:Click on Manage Property

Next, choose one of the verification methods listed (3) and follow the instructions; using an HTML file is the simplest way. After this, select Verify (4):

Find Change of Address under Settings

Now, you have to do the same thing for each of your URLs; www, non-www,http, and https. Once done, choose your preferred domain (website main URL):Change of Address steps

After you have selected your preferred domain, go to Settings (1), then Site Settings (2), and choose the preferred URL (3).Choose your preferred domain

It is crucial to set up a 301 redirect to the preferred URL!

There is a lot of different information in the internet about how to do this, but after a lot of tests we have confirmed that the best way is via the .htaccess file redirect.

The .htaccess rule looks like this:

RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^ [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$$1 [L,R=301,NC]

and needs to be added on the top of the .htaccess file which can be accessed via the File Manager.

After this is complete, you will have a new preferred URL, a more secure website (thanks to your SSL certificate), and you won’t lose your SEO rakings either!
