How can I change my WordPress username?

In this article, we will go through a step-by-step guide on changing your username when needed. Sometimes having multiple websites with different usernames is a hassle and they need to be updated regardless for security reasons.

In most alternatives, changing your username will require you to log in to your WPX Account and make changes through the hosting panel or through your WordPress dashboard.

Step 1. Log in to your WPX account

You can log in to your WPX account here.

Step 2. Navigate to your hosting plan

You can either find your hosting service through the navigation menu or within your dashboard. Once you log in to your WPX account select My Services (1) → WordPress Hosting (2).

Then you will see all of your hosting services with us. When you find the plan that you want to manage, you need to select the orange button Manage service.

Step 3. Changing the username through PHPMyAdmin

This is one of the alternatives for changing your username and it is done through the database of your website, which contains all the users for each website you have on your hosting service.

As a start, you need to navigate through your WPX Client Panel, locate the Database section (1), and select phpMyAdmin button (2):

Once in the phpMyAdmin panel, you need to select the specific database of the website you want to get into with a “+” (1) sign and it will drop down all the tables in it. From there you need to search for wp_users table (2) and select Edit (3) to the specific username you want to change:

You will see two tables named user_login (1) and user_nicename (2). They need to be identical, so make sure to edit the username to the desired one on both fields:

If you’d like you can also change the last value “display_name” which refers to the name that appears next to your blog posts and profile page:

Once you are done entering the correct username on both fields, you need to scroll down and save the changes by choosing Go:

That’s the official way to do it through the database.

Step 4. Change your username through the WordPress Dashboard

This step would be easier since it is done directly through the site. It requires logging inside your admin dashboard to complete.

Keep in mind that this step requires you to log in as an admin user who has all the rights to edit and create new users through the panel.

Once you are logged in, you can navigate to the Users section (1) and select the Add New tab (2):

Once inside the tab, you can enter the desired new user details such as username, password, email address, and website name. We recommend that you use the Password Generator (1) to get a secure one that you can save somewhere else and make sure to edit the Role of the user to Administrator (2). When you are done with all the details, you can continue by saving the changes by choosing Add New User (3):

That’s it! You have successfully added the new user. Keep in mind that if you wish to start using the new username, you would need to log out and log in with the new credentials.
